Project Overview
The Lost Samurai is a short narrative film directed by Yuta Okamura at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Blending cultural identity, cinematic genre language, and character-based storytelling, the film reflects the intersection of Japanese and American cultures — tradition and modernity, myth and personal truth.

Production Approach
Shot on 16mm film in Los Angeles, the production combined genre-inspired visual storytelling with a strong emphasis on atmosphere, texture, and physical presence. Collaborating with wardrobe and makeup artists whose credits include Shōgun, the film drew on the strength of Los Angeles’s Japanese and Japanese American creative community.

Result
The Lost Samurai became one of Yuta Okamura’s defining early short films, receiving the Hatch Grand Prize and the Rapplack Best Picture Award. The film helped establish his cross-cultural filmmaking voice and his ability to merge genre, emotion, and visual craft into a distinctive narrative form.
